I know it won’t contain the fibres but in regards to the vitamins, minerals and other benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.

If I were to make juice containing fruit and vegetables (usually 1
apple, 1 orange, 3 carrots and a stick of celery) with no added sugar. 100% pure juice. Would it be the same as eating the fruits and vegetables whole instead of juiced?

Also….is it bad to go over the 2 fruits and 5 vegetables by a lot?
(It’s a campaign run over Australia about eating 2 fruits and 5 veg a day)

I’m not an expert, however, I do believe it’s the same thing. Doesn’t matter if you juice the veg/fruit or if you eat it whole.

The only question that I must ask is: Are you drinking the skin of these fruits/veg that you are juicing? This will make a difference if you are not incorporating them into your juice. Remember, the skin has many nutrients and vitamins within it.

*Edit - I’m assuming you don’t because most juicers have the skin of the fruit left back into a separate container. It would be wise to not throw this out, but, to toss it into your juiced veg!

i know the required amount of vegetables per day is 5 servings, but i usually eat 2 servings of vegetables and then eat a lot of dried fruits and drink a lot of orange juice. is that ok?

It’s okay as long as you eat enough vegetables and fruits daily
in your normal diet. In fact, what you’re eating here is already
sufficient. I’ve known some people who never liked to eat their
vegetables and fruits at all. But they usually take multi-vitamins
to supplement their diet.

I really don’t eat many fruits or vegetables…at all. It’s not that I don’t like them as much as it is that I just never really feel like eating them. I love strawberries and I used to make smoothies a lot (strawberry banana mmm), but they go bad fast and are expensive. The only thing I really take in regularly is the diet V8 Splash/Fusion and low carb Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice.

I have been taking a good multi vitamin for years though - it contains well over 100% RDA of lots of things. It’s Ultra Vita-Man from Vitamin World. So if I’m taking that every day, should I not feel guilty about eating maybe…1 serving of fruits/veggies a week (not counting the juice)?
Can anyone tell me WHY I should eat fruits/veggies in addition to taking my multi vitamin? Or WHY the vitamins in fruits/veggies are better than the ones in my multi?

I think that pretty much covers my bases.
For fiber, I eat lots of whole grains - I bake my own whole grain bread, eat whole grain cereal for breakfast, and use whole grain pasta (I forgot - I eat lots of pasta sauce - homemade from a local italian restaurant). I also eat this healthy popcorn that has 30g of fiber in it. So I think I’m good with fiber, too.

I also take a Salmon Oil softgel supplement with my multi vitamin every morning.
Vitamins C and E are good anti-oxidants, so my multi is full of those, too.
I would love to start my own garden but I’m a college student living in a small apartment with no balcony…and little daylight…I wouldn’t have the room (or the necessary light) for one. I used to have a garden at my home when I was younger…I grew tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, carrots and potatoes. But the deer always came at night and ate them.

I’m also not a vegan/vegetarian. Sorry, but I love meat (lean meat). Could never live without it. But I thought this would be a good place to post this question because I assume that those here are more well informed about vitamin forms that are good for the body.

It goes like this:

Pure Vitamins cannot be put in a bottle. Vitamins are an intrinsic part of a living thing and cannot be separated. Why, because vitamins are a complex, not just one element. What you see in a bottle of, say, Vitamin C is only one part of Vitamin C, usually the acid, with is only the preservative part of Vitamin C. Vitamin pills are a total scam. Perhaps a supplement made form whole foods would be better, but it would still be highly processed. I’m thinking that spirulina and blue green algae and such products would be the best alternative.

Vitamins within a plant are naturally balanced with all of the other elements that make up the plant, thus, if you eat it, you will be eating a balanced food, and thus be balanced yourself. If you take a pill, even if it’s packed with nutrition, it’s totally unbalanced and thus you will be unbalanced. Being out of balance will put a lot of stress on your body because it will have to fight to keep in balance and do some drastic things such as break this down and get rid of it, take some of that from there and put it here, etc.

Think of osteoporosis. Why does that exist? Because someone eats too much protein over many years. The body only needs and is only capable of using a very small amount of protein and any excess protein needs to be broken down and gotten rid of, and to do this it takes energy, vitamins, minerals, including a lot of calcium. The body takes emergency calcium from the bones to get rid of this excess protein.

So, balance is the key to good health.
So, start a garden. It’s easy; it can even be done in thick plastic bags or pots on the apartment balcony. There are whole sections of books in your local library dedicated to such topics as growing your own food. And it’s cheap cheap cheap!! We have a garden, and it’s an all-year-round garden in Canada. We literally go to the garden and pull out $20 retail worth of stuff and it doesn’t even look like we touched a thing. Living like kings, especially in the spring, summer, fall. It’s one of those things that seems daunting, but once you start growing your own food, it’s super easy. It’s like learning to bake bread; you only get better as time goes on.

My husband hates vegetables but he is able to juice them with fruit and drink them. Is that strategy just as good as eating the vegetables?

He would juice a head of cabbage, 2-3 carrots, a bush of broccoli, 1/2 a squash, a bush of collard greens, celery, apples, oranges, blackberries and strawberries. He drinks about 24 oz daily. Is he getting the proper serving of vegetables and fruit by juicing them this way?

You get more vitamins and minerals but no fiber when you juice. It’s also easier to drink about 10 vegetables in one glass than to eat about 4 pounds of vegetables whole. On the other hand, it gets pretty expensive to do that all the time.

I have been eating alot of vegtables and drinking their juice from a juice extractor. it removes alot of the fiber, but I also eat big salads and stirfrys with everything in them, broccolli, cauliflower and just about any thing else that grows. however, I am wondering if it could be bad eating all these vegetables and fruits. I also have one grain and bean meal a day and fish at night. Could all these veggies be an overdose or is that even possible?

The food pyramid says this is equal to one serving of vegetables:
1 cup of raw leafy vegetables OR
1/2 cup of other vegetables, cooked or raw OR
3/4 cup of vegetable juice

This is equal to one serving of fruit
One medium apple, orange or banana OR
1/2 cup of chopped, cooked or canned fruit OR
3/4 cup of fruit juice

According to the food pyramid we’re to eat 3-5 servings of veggies per day and 2-4 servings of fruit per day.

So what are some creative ways you have found to ensure that you get those fruits and veggies you need? If you don’t currently do this, then your answer could be along the lines of what you would like to do, or might plan to do in the future to ensure this.

Im a spinach salad lover like Kimberly… I love doing the same.. I use apples, oranges and walnuts or almonds over the spinach, I also use tiny slivers of red onion in mine.. I like the tang/sweet mix.. and I make my own salad dressing with yogurt, honey, mustard, and a dash of apple cider vinegar, black pepper and pour over this…
also I am a natural smoothie lover.. I use low fat yogurt and I use frozen bits of whatever fruit I have.. When I buy fruit, when it gets to the point I dont want to eat it crisp and fresh, I dont toss it, I cut it up and freeze it in bits in a huge ziplock freezer baggy. then later I take out pieces, pop in the blender with yogurt and a tsp of honey, some almonds and mmm!..
I also make huge buckets of vegetable soup, like minestrone and I freeze some for later on those days, I just dont like cooking.. when I roast chicken or other meats. I pile root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic, turnips etc all over the pan and roast it along with the meat..
I also like to do light oriental sautes.. I slice green or red bell peppers, garlic, onions, bamboo shoots, juilienned carrots and saute them lightly with a little chicken breast.. I eat this over steamed rice…
for snacks.. I eat apple wedges with natural peanut butter on them…
I like to snack on frozen green seedless grapes in the summer. they are like mini popcycles for me..

2 things help me sh#t. Having a bowl of cereal when I wakeup and drinking lots of water all day.

When I changed my diet to being more moderate in portions, I sh#ted everyday rather than every other day like before.

I recently purchased a good juicer, and have made some good (and bad) drinks playing about with broccoli, carrots, etc… but what’s everyones favourite? Any favourite websites too??

Sorry if this disappoints you but vegetable drinks usually aren’t that great… I wouldn’t recommend broccolli, instead tomatoes, carrots etc. To make vegetable drinks you must boil it in water first to soften it, and it’s crucial to add flavourings, salt etc while it’s boiling, then blend it in a mixture… With fruit anything is possible. Just don’t use any fruit with skins on and use crushed ice as a filler for ice cream.. mix and match with low GI yogurt and add extra fruit juice for your specified thickness… You can find some great recipies on www.healthrecipies.com
